Whether you are in the fashion industry or not you should watch this...

\
When my boyfriend showed me this video I was left dumbstruck. This talk was such an eye opener to not only the question of, "What is beauty?" But also, "What is disability?" A little background on Aimee Mullins; she was diagnosed with fibular hemimelia, which is missing fibula bones, at the age of one. This resulted in the amputation of both her legs. In 1996 she competed in the Paralympics in Atlanta where she ran the 100-meter dash in 17.01 seconds and jumped 3.14 meters in the long-jump. She has had a successful and extensive career in fashion which you can find out more in this video.
Such a fascinating talk. Please have a look and give me your feedback.

  1. Hi Victoria,

    I love your blog!!
I'm an aspiring fashion stylist from Ireland and was wondering if you could give me some advice. Me and my boyfriend are going to Canada in a few months, we're going to live in Canada for a year and then do some travelling around America. Can you recommend any places or stylists I could intern with. I would like to also continue doing my own styling while in Canada. Is Toronto or Vancouver good for getting work as a stylist? Thanks, Eimear xx

  2. Hi Eimear!!!
I'm glad you're enjoying the blog, there is definitely more great entries to come. I'm going to try and talk a little bit more about the connection between fashion and the performing arts.
Living in Toronto I have also started to search for internships myself to no avail. It seems that the word "wardrobe stylist" means working in retail. I don't know much about the Vancouver scene but I do believe it would be the same. Your best bet is to work in Toronto with different photographers, models, designers, etc on TF (trade for) or small paid jobs just to build experience and networks. I usually find these jobs on Model Mayhem (www.modelmayhem.com) or Now Magazine classifieds (http://www.nowtoronto.com/classifieds/classifieds.cfm). Another idea is contacting the few magazines from here and see if they have any internships opening up. There is Fashion, Flare, Dressed to Kill, Zink, Elle Canada, Glow, Plaid Magazine, Chloe Magazine, that's just to name a few. Try contacting Chenessa from Style Empire Magazine (www.styleempire.ca) which is an online fashion magazine. They may be looking for some interns and they are great to work with.
I say your best bet is to stick with Toronto. Vancouver is more into the film and TV industry while Toronto is very fashion orientated so you'll probably find more opportunities here. Toronto is also closer to Montreal and Ottawa which are becoming very fashion focused cities, especially Ottawa surprisingly. I say just work with as many photographers and industry insiders as you can just from freelancing. That's what I have done and it's worked out very well for me. Feel free to give me a shout when you're here at victoria.ellingham@hotmail.com and maybe discuss more especially when you arrive. I hope that's helped! Enjoy your visit and I highly recommend seeing the Bata Shoe Museum of Toronto while you are here. All the best!
